Mitsubishi Electrified the Audience with the GT-PHEV Concept

Mitsubishi showed off one of the most attractive plug-in SUV hybrids at the Paris Motor Show this month. The vehicle is styled like a coupe, and outfitted with lavish red leather. It’s capable of travelling up to 75 miles on a charge, and offers capable all-wheel drive handling. Not only that, but it’s capable of driving well after that 75 mile range, and will do so with hybrid-like fuel efficiency.

The Look

The Mitsubishi GT-PHEV is a luxurious SUV, and is styled as such. It comes with a low-lying roofline and a sharp windshield that gives it an almost coupe-like appearance. The SUV has wide sleek taillights, massive vertical driving lights an interesting grill that curves inwards from a large flair up at the top right at the edge of the hood, and sleek headlights that are positioned at either side of the grill.

On the inside of the vehicle it’s clear that this is a luxury SUV. The carefully contoured seats are adorned with a red leather that’s spread throughout the rest of the interior, including on the steering wheel and dash. The center console has a cockpit-style control panel with a large knob and some pretty sophisticated looking controls.

The Power Source

The concept vehicle comes with three different electric motors and a 2.5 liter gasoline engine. One of the electric engines assists the gas-powered engine to drive both of the front wheels, and the other two electric motors work to drive the rear wheels exclusively. This provides an all-wheel drive functionality to the vehicle, which should offer it excellent stability while out on the road.

There is a 25-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery powering the electric motors in the vehicle ,and it comes with enough power to allow the vehicle to cover a distance of 75 miles before using a single drop of fuel.

It’s unclear whether this concept vehicle is ever going to become an actual vehicle in the Mitsubishi lineup, but it could have some very real promise. Of course it wouldn’t be cheap, with such a luxurious setup, but if Mitsubishi could offer the advertised range on the vehicle, it could serve as an excellent commuter vehicle for workers that enjoy luxury and comfort. It’s designed to seat five comfortably, and is truly stunning to look at.
