Mitsubishi is known for quite a few quality vehicles to date, but there is one that stands out above all the rest, the Outlander. The Outlander is responsible for more than 1.5 million sales over its 3 generations, and it’s clearly the favorite among all the Mitsubishi offerings to date. There’s a few reasons for that, but the main one is that Mitsubishi continues to innovate with the crossover, and it offers all the right features in America’s most popular segment at the moment.
The First Outlander
The very first Outlander stood out because it was dubbed a “crossover”. It’s essentially the first compact sport utility vehicle that was called a crossover and could even be considered the founder of the crossover term. This vehicle stood out in a fledgling segment and really turned heads. It was known as an Active Sport concept vehicle from the very beginning, and drivers looking for a rugged, sporty vehicle that’s still compact enough to be practical, were more than happy to hop behind the wheel of the first Mitsubishi Outlander.
The 2nd Outlander
When the 2nd Outlander was released it kept that crossover heritage and aggressive tendencies, but it did so on a global architecture platform known as the Project Global C/D. It was a platform project supported by a range of auto manufacturers, which helped Mitsubishi come up with an even better base for the Outlander and to save some money doing it. All the new features and improvements offered by this global architecture helped to push the crossover to new heights of popularity.
The 3rd Outlander
We’re in the third generation of the Mitsubishi Outlander and it’s going just as strong as the original. This model is gaining in popularity because of the plug-in hybrid electric variant that’s set to be offered. It’s not going to be the first crossover to come with a plug and a hybrid setup, but it will be one of the most sporty options. It’s designed for buyers that want to cut down on fuel consumption and do something good for the environment, while still enjoying a sporty and fun driving experience.
Mitsubishi is pushing green technology just like many other top automakers today, but the Outlander continues to stand out amongst all the other crossovers, thanks to careful design decisions and features added to the vehicle to appeal to all the Mitsubishi fans out there.
